The Racing Car

Creating a 1980s SCCA SS/GT Fox Mustang racing car from multiple buckets of parts and one 1988 Saleen Mustang. Vroom vroom.

The Racing Car – Pre-planning

As a fan of 1960s & early 1970s street legal road racing / competition vehicles and a fan of 1980s and 1990s “showroom stock” competition vehicles; I began thinking how cool it would be to construct a “tribute” or “what if” racing vehicle.

My “what if” thoughts began to take shape after locating an open track car based on a 1988 Saleen Mustang road/street model. Historically this ’88 appeared to be a “dealer sales stock unit,” in a common exterior color, with no significant optional equipment or history. When this vehicle had 80,000 est miles, it was stripped and converted into an open track / club day race car. As racing plans fell through, a racing logbook was never issued and this vehicle was stripped again and sold for parts.

I purchased the remains with the long term plan of constructing a “what if”, period appearing, late 1980s showroom stock, street legal, competition vehicle. “What if after viewing a televised showroom stock event… someone visited Big Valley Ford and decided to purchase a vehicle to enter competitively.”

The end result will be a faux racer, with no collector value, but will be a blank canvas to be creative with and 100% mine.
